Insurance For Contractors

Contractor General Liability
Commercial General Liability Insurance for contractors is intended to guard operators and owners of companies from claims that may come from a broad spectrum of sources. These exposures could be just about anything, including liability engendered by accidents from the operations of the insured party, contractual liability, products manufactured by the insured party, property damage, bodily injury, premises and operations liability, products and completed operations, advertising injury, fire legal liability (damage to rented/leased property), medical payments, and owner contractor protective (OCP).

Workers' Compensation
Workers' Compensation Insurance covers medical expenses and lost income of your employees if they are hurt in the course of performing work-related activities. Workers' Compensation is a no-fault system of compensation in which employees who are injured at work may obtain payment for lost wages, medical costs, and occupational rehabilitation expenses without regard to their personal negligence or fault. In exchange for this no-fault system, employees give up their right to sue their employers directly for negligence or other damages. Minimum Limits of Liability in California is $1 Million.

Commercial Auto Insurance
You need the same kinds of insurance coverages for the car you use in your business as you do for a car used for personal travel – liability, collision and comprehensive, medical payments (known as personal injury protection in some states) and coverage for uninsured motorists. In fact, many business people use the same vehicle for both business and pleasure. If the vehicle is owned by the business, make sure the name of the business appears on the policy as the "principal insured" rather than your name. This will avoid possible confusion in the event that you need to file a claim or a claim is filed against you. While the major coverages are the same, a business auto policy differs from a personal auto policy in many technical respects. Give us a call and we will gladly explain all the differences and options.

Inland Marine - Tools & Equipment Coverage
Inland Marine Insurance protects goods that are on the move. This includes special types of property that are mobile, of unique value, related to transportation or communication, or otherwise considered to need special protection. For example, if your business specialty tools and equipment, inland marine insurance could be used to protect your tools and equipment. If you have high value machinery, inland marine insurance could be used to protect your equipment. Coverage can include direct physical loss for miscellaneous tools, scheduled tools, rented equipment, leased equipment, and other business equipment listed on the policy. An Inland Marine policy may also provide coverage for property, including equipment, materials, machinery, and supplies that may become a permanent part of a job.

Builders Risk
A Builders Risk policy is designed to provide coverage for buildings while under construction. It covers the contractor’s interest in materials at the job site before they are installed, materials in transit intended for the job and the value of the property being constructed until it is completed and accepted by the owner. A policy may be written to cover the whole structure for New construction or the cost of Remodeling and Renovation projects. It can also be used to cover specific projects such as a new room addition, a deck or a remodeled kitchen.

Umbrella & Exess Liability Coverage
Umbrella & Excess insurance is designed to protect business owners against those multi-million dollar losses no company ever wants to have. Once your business is protected by the basic types of insurance coverages (like commercial auto and general liability insurance), you may want to consider an umbrella policy for extended coverage. An umbrella policy would provide additional coverage once the limits of the underlying policies have been exhausted.

Bonds

Contractor License Bonds

A Contractor License Bond assures that a contractor complies with local laws relating to his field. A contractor license bond is a requirement for all licensed contractors in the State of California, and must be on file with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) prior to issuance or renewal of a Contractors License.

Contractor Surety Bonds

Contract bonds are used heavily in the construction industry. They are a guarantee from a Surety to a project's owner (Obligee) that a general contractor (Principal) will adhere to the provisions of a contract. The following are bonds that are included in this category.

  • Bid bonds - guarantee that a contractor will enter into a contract if awarded the bid.

  • Performance bonds - guarantee that a contractor will perform the work as specified by the contract.

  • Payment bonds - guarantee that a contractor will pay for services and materials.

  • Maintenance bonds - guarantee that a contractor will provide facility repair and upkeep for a specified period of time.

There are also miscellaneous contract bonds that do not fall within the categories above, the most common of which are subdivision and supply bonds.
